Last Wednesday, 15 February, the Secretary of International Economic Relations, Horacio Reyser, presided over a meeting with agribusiness private sector representatives, to look at opportunities to grow product exports to Mexico.

Present at the meeting were authorities from the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Agro-industry and the National Service of Agri-food Health and Quality (SENASA in the Spanish acronym), in addition to representatives from 12 Argentine Business Chambers and Federations.

The evolution of the trade relationship between both countries was reviewed, as well as the improvement of bilateral bonds after the presidential visit of 29 July last. A work agenda was established, which includes Argentina’s attendance at the Fair of the National Retailers Association of Mexico (ANTAD), Mexico’s main food fair, to be held on 7-9 March in Guadalajara.

In 2016, our country exported USD 778.4 million to Mexico and imported USD 1.655 billion from it. These figures show that overall bilateral trade reached USD 2.5 billion in 2016, with a high concentration on industrial goods. In this regard, the export and import flows of a single industrial sector (the automotive sector) account for approximately 37% of bilateral trade.

As regards agricultural products, which represented 22% of exports to Mexico in 2016, wine was the top export, standing at USD 26.5 million, a 23% interannual rise. It was followed closely by sunflower oil, which amounted to USD 26.4 million, followed by other important Manufactures of Agricultural Origin, including whole bovine hides and furs, corn grain, quebracho extract, glycerol, non-parboiled half-white or white rice, whole milk powder, sunflower seeds for sowing, fresh pears, sour juices (citrus), tobacco, peanuts, modified milk for children and cereal-based food preparations.
