On 14-15 May, the Scientific Sub-committee of the South Atlantic Fisheries Commission (SAFC) met in Buenos Aires, pursuant to the Joint Declaration of 28 November 1990. The meeting was attended by scientists and officials from the Argentine Republic and from the United Kingdom.

Both delegations addressed issues of mutual interest in the field of scientific cooperation for the preservation of fishery resources in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. As part of conservation measures, they discussed mechanisms for the exchange of scientific information, discussed fish and squid species that will be the subject of cooperation efforts and considered the possibility of launching joint scientific expeditions. The delegations also agreed to meet in London in November 2018.

Both the meeting and its outcome are covered under the sovereignty formula on the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands, as well as the surrounding maritime areas, as agreed by both Governments in paragraph 2 of the Joint Statement of Madrid of 19 October 1989. Press release No. 199/18
