368/17

Today, MERCOSUR and the European Union began a working week in Brussels within the framework of the negotiations to conclude a Partnership Agreement.

The event is being attended by officials from Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil, which holds the presidency of MERCOSUR during this half of the year. The Argentine delegation is chaired by the Secretary for International Economic Relations, Horacio Reyser.

During this intersessional meeting, the following negotiation groups will meet: Market Access, Rules of Origin, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, Technical Barriers to Trade, Services and Establishment, Government Procurement, Intellectual Property, Trade and Sustainable Development and Dispute Resolution.

This agreement will contain provisions on the creation of a free trade area, but it will also establish a strategic partnership that will define the basis for political dialogue and cooperation between the two regions.

The opening of the vast European market -500 million inhabitants with high purchasing power- for Argentine and MERCOSUR products is of great importance.

During the rest of this year, MERCOSUR and the European Union will hold monthly meetings to reach an agreement that satisfies both parties.
