Mercosur – Pacific Alliance meeting of Foreign Ministers: Situation in Syria

Friday, 07 April 2017
Information for the Press N°:
120/17

The Governments of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay express their deep concern about the escalation of violence in Syria and strongly condemn the inhuman use of chemical weapons in Syria against civilians, including children.

The use of chemical weapons is a crime against humanity and a war crime, prohibited under international treaties, including the United Nations Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction, so actions to prevent these atrocities must be backed by the entire international community in accordance with international law rules and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

We call on all the parties involved, including influential actors in the region, to act prudently to avoid an escalation of tensions and to find a political solution to the highly complex and dramatic situation in Syria, under the auspices of the United Nations.
