In the face of reported acts of vandalism at the Malvinas Islands Darwin Cemetery memorial to Argentina’s soldiers fallen in the South Atlantic Conflict, the Argentine Foreign Ministry presented a note today to the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland expressing the Argentine Government’s condemnation of those acts and requesting that they be immediately investigated.
The damage to the Memorial, which was built thanks to the Joint Declaration signed by the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom on 14 July 1999, is particularly regrettable in light of the recent signing by both Governments of instruments to enable, in collaboration with the Red Cross, the identification of the unidentified Argentine soldiers buried at Darwin Cemetery. The Foreign Ministry stated that this significant advance in such a sensitive humanitarian issue is not consistent with the intolerance and violence displayed by those who attacked the resting place of the Argentine servicemen killed in 1982.
The Argentine Government once again reaffirmed its legitimate rights over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas, which are an integral part of Argentina’s national territory.
