Official visit by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu

Argentine Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra received her Turkish counterpart, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, today at the Palacio San Martín.

Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu laid a wreath at the Libertador General San Martin Monument and then held a private meeting with Malcorra. Both Ministers then presided over an extended meeting with their respective delegations. In the afternoon, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey met with the Argentine Vice President, Gabriela Michetti.

At their meeting, the Foreign Ministers expressed their intention to strengthen bilateral relations in various fields, especially economic-trade, technological and investment matters, which present significant opportunities for cooperation. In this respect, officials of the Argentine Applied Research Institute (INVAP) presented to Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu the opportunities the Argentine Republic offers with regard to the development of advanced technology in different fields of the nuclear and satellite industry, science and applied research.

The Foreign Ministers signed an "Agreement on Cooperation and Mutual Assistance in Customs Matters" and exchanged draft Cooperation Agreements in the fields of Agriculture and Sports, as well as a Draft Memorandum of Understanding between the White Helmets Commission of the Argentine Republic and the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of the Republic of Turkey.

Likewise, they expressed interest in continuing to cement and strengthen bilateral inter-parliamentary cooperation by promoting the exchange of visits and experiences.

At a multilateral level, they highlighted the good relationship between both countries at important forums such as the G20, WTO and ECLAC and they identified possibilities for cooperation within the framework of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations initiative, sponsored by Turkey and Spain and of which Argentina is an active member.

The Argentine Foreign Minister expressed gratitude for Turkey’s support for Argentina’s position in the Question of the Malvinas Islands and for our country’s request to become a full member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Furthermore, the parties reaffirmed their interest in boosting Turkey’s relations with MERCOSUR. Argentina’s Presidency Pro Tempore of MERCOSUR will serve to promote those negotiations.

Finally, the parties showed interest in setting a date for the 4th Meeting of the Joint Bilateral Committee, as well as in holding Political Consultations.
