173/16

The Argentine Foreign Ministry deeply regrets the passing of engineer and sociologist Torcuato Salvador Francisco Di Tella, which occurred in the City of Buenos Aires very early today.

Di Tella was born in 1929 and specialized in the comparative study of Latin American political systems. He studied industrial engineering and later completed a Master's Degree in Sociology at Columbia University, New York, in 1953.

Engineer Di Tella worked as a professor at the University of Chile and at the University of Buenos Aires. He was also a visiting professor at the universities of California (Berkeley), London, Oxford, Columbia, Stanford and Kobe.

In 1958, he co-founded, together with his brother Guido —ex Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship—, the Torcuato Di Tella Institute. Through this institution, he focused his activities on developing the fields of art, economy, social sciences and urbanism, which contributed to the development of avant-garde art in the 1960s in our country.

With regard to his work in the government sector, he was Secretary for Culture from 2003 to 2004 and Ambassador to the Italian Republic from 2010 to 2015.

Di Tella was an enthusiastic supporter of culture, art and politics. He especially contributed to the development of art, history, architecture, political science and sociology in the Argentine Republic.

A vigil will be held at the Di Tella University (Av. Figueroa Alcorta 7350). The burial will take place at the Chacarita Cemetery.
