Information for the Press N°:
097/17

The Argentine Government is deeply concerned about the recent decision of the Venezuelan Supreme Tribunal of Justice limiting the powers of the National Assembly and restricting its popularly elected members’ parliamentary immunity.

Argentina asserts the importance of fully upholding the rule of law and democratic principles in Venezuela, including the fundamental principles of separation of powers and respect for freedom of speech.

As Argentina reaffirms the contents of the Statement signed on March 23 along with other countries of the region, it restates that dialogue and political consensus are the only possible avenues for solving the crisis faced by the sister nation of Venezuela, and urges the Venezuelan Government to resume said dialogue in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

The Argentine Government reiterates its intent to collaborate with the people and Government of Venezuela to reestablish social peace in their country, within a framework of full respect for democratic institutions.
