The president of the White Helmets Commission of the Argentine Foreign Ministry, ambassador Alejandro Daneri, participated in the opening of sessions during the seminar on the needs for the admission of refugees organized by the government of Canada and the Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative called Emerging Resettlement Countries Joint Support Mechanism (ECRM.) The President of the White Helmets was joined by the Argentine Ambassador to Canada, Marcelo Suárez Salvia; the Director for Protection Policies of the Canadian Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Chris Gregory; and the president of the Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative, Jennifer Bond. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) participated in the event as well.
During the debates, Argentina, Brazil and Chile spoke about the needs and ways to accomplish their objectives.
In this regard, Argentina underscored the progress of its program, and presented an important delegation made up of representatives of several ranks in the Federal and provincial governments. The delegation included the President of the White Helmets, the President of the Argentine Commission for Refugees (CO.NA.RE. in Spanish), representatives of the Chief of Cabinet of Ministers’ Office, the General Coordinator of the Refugees Committee of the Province of San Luis and representatives of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) from the civil society.
In order to shape the international support to be received by the participating countries, during the meeting there was an exchange of experiences on and technical knowledge of potential private sponsors as alternatives for the admission of refugees in need of protection, the way to incorporate government officials and representatives of the civil society to the debate on taking opportunities of private sponsorship, the participation of the community, the establishment of a basis for developing work plans and the better use of cooperation relations.
Argentina stood out as one of the leading countries in addressing refugees’ affairs.
