Statement on the situation in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela

Thursday, 04 May 2017
Information for the Press N°:
159/17

The Governments of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Paraguay deplore the deterioration of the domestic situation and the intensification of violence in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which has left a rising death and injury toll since April 6.

We condemn the excessive use of force by the Venezuelan authorities against civilians protesting over government measures that adversely affect democratic stability, further polarize the Venezuelan society, and cause the loss of human lives, mostly youngsters.

We strongly call on the Venezuelan government to respect the human rights of the Venezuelan citizens, as established in their Constitution.

As a current member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has a duty to apply the strictest rules on promotion and protection of human rights to fulfil the commitments and obligations imposed by the international treaties on human rights that the country has subscribed and ratified.

Within the framework of full respect for the rule of law and to stabilize the situation in Venezuela, we reiterate the importance of complying with the elections calendar, releasing political prisoners, restoring the powers of the National Assembly democratically elected and guaranteeing the separation of powers.

Lastly, we call on all sectors not to endorse actions that generate more violence, and we express our firm belief that it is time to reach an inclusive national agreement that provides a long-lasting solution to the critical situation faced by Venezuela.
