"We must redouble our efforts and talk about the same things, aiming at the same project for the organization, united in diversity," stated Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra today at the Extraordinary Meeting of Foreign Ministers of UNASUR held in Quito, Ecuador.

"Achievements must be recognized, which is why I would like to thank the Secretary-General for his work and effort," noted Malcorra referring to the end of Ernesto Samper's mandate at the helm of the bloc.

The Argentine Foreign Minister added: "We are convinced that current times require joint work more than ever, and this work must be integrated into concrete aspects of life. The basis of the organization has to do with a stronger, more solid American continent."

"Trade within the region has not grown; neither has direct investment. These are things that make a difference and we need to pay special attention to them. Projects related to the creation of infrastructure are essential to the connectivity and integration of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and they contribute to bringing countries that have coasts on the Pacific closer to the Atlantic Ocean, and vice versa."

Finally, Malcorra concluded: "I firmly believe that we have a chance and I am optimistic. However, we must act wisely and swiftly, because if we don't we run the risk of not passing the test before us and failing to strengthen the organization."
