Every April 2 is a day of remembrance, tribute and recognition to our compatriots who fought heroically for the recovery of the effective exercise of sovereignty over the Malvinas, South Georgias, and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime spaces.
On the 39th anniversary of the beginning of the conflict in the South Atlantic, we Argentines respectfully honor the combatants who gave their lives and those who returned to the continent and bear in their bodies and minds the consequences of having gone through the drama of the armed conflict.
From the Argentine Government we also accompany today the pain of the relatives who lost their loved ones and of those who remain together with those who bear the physical and spiritual wounds of combat. A special recognition is deserved by women, health professionals who acted with the same courage as their peers, helping them in many cases to survive.
The best way to honor them is to continue working every day to achieve the objective of recovering the effective exercise of sovereignty over the Malvinas, South Georgias, South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime spaces, for which many of them gave their lives. We also denounce the existence of a British military base in the Islands that ignores all United Nations resolutions and the usurpation of the natural resources of the South Atlantic that belong to the Argentine people. Moreover, and honoring their memory, the Argentine Government continues to redouble its efforts, always through peaceful means, dialogue, diplomacy and compliance with international law, in order to allow that the consensus of the international community through multilateral organizations create the conditions for the United Kingdom to resume bilateral negotiations on sovereignty in the terms proposed by the United Nations in General Assembly Resolution 2065 (XX) and a plurality of resolutions from various international organizations and forums.
The Argentine Government will continue committed to the design and implementation of long-term State policies with the objective of complying with the certainty and sentiment of Argentines regarding the constitutional mandate to “recover these territories and the full exercise of the sovereignty” which “constitutes a permanent and inalienable objective of the Argentine people”.
