The Secretariat of the Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic, the Undersecretariat of University Policies, the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) and the National University of Tierra del Fuego (UNTDF) launched a call that will award up to ten original essays on the Malvinas Question, Antarctica and the South Atlantic.
The initiative, which was presented virtually last May 12, is the continuation of the Call for Papers on Malvinas, promoted among the organizing institutions in 2015, and the Call for Research Projects. The contest seeks to promote the study of these issues, which are strategic for both the country and the region.
The Secretary of the Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic, Daniel Filmus; the Secretary of University Policies, Jaime Perczyk; the Undersecretary of University Policies, César Albornoz; the Executive Secretary of CLACSO , Karina Batthyány; the Rector of the UNTDF, Juan Castelucci, and the Academic Secretary of the UNTDF, Patricia Vara. The activity was moderated by Uriel Erlich, member of the Secretariat of the Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic, and Pablo Vommaro, Research Director of CLACSO .
The participants pointed out the importance of the Question of the Malvinas Islands and expressed the need to end colonial cases still present in the 21st century, in accordance with international law and the mandate of the United Nations. They highlighted Antarctica, as a territory dedicated to peace and science through international cooperation, within the framework of the Antarctic Treaty, and as a priority issue for the protection of the Antarctic environment and its dependent and associated ecosystems, the conservation of fishery resources and the preservation of mineral resources. Regarding the South Atlantic, they also emphasized the current regulations and the protection of natural resources and biodiversity, key for the development of research and science, which represent an excellent opportunity to promote cooperation and integration with the region, as well as with other countries with similar interests.
With the aim of deepening the approach to the Malvinas, Antarctica and the South Atlantic, a jury will select up to ten original essays on the subject of the call.
The awards include the digital publication of all the selected works and, for the first five, support for participation in a seminar to be held at the headquarters of the National University of Tierra del Fuego in the city of Ushuaia, in which the results and publication will be presented .
The initiative has the support of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), the he Center for Workers Innovation (CITRA) of the Metropolitan University for Education and Work (UMET) and the Institute of Culture, Society and State (ICSE) of the UNTDF.
Participation is open, with prior registration through the official CLACSO website. The deadline for submission of papers is July 27.
