The Commission for Dialogue on Malvinas was established in Algeria

By Mariano Simón Padrós, Ambassador of the Argentine Republic in the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria

On February 28, the Commission for Dialogue on Malvinas was created in Algeria, which brought together academics, journalists and other relevant personalities of Algerian political life in order to promote and disseminate the Malvinas Question, give visibility to the Argentine position and generate initiatives in the academic, cultural, political and media fields.

During the meeting, I made a detailed presentation of the legal and historical elements that support the claim of sovereignty by the legitimate Argentine rights over the Malvinas, South Georgias, and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas. I also gave to those present material that sustains our legitimate claim, in French and Arabic. Among others, the article written by Secretary Daniel Filmus under the title “Malvinas Islands: a territory taken by force by the United Kingdom”, published in the prestigious Algerian newspaper Liberté on the occasion of the bicentennial of the first raising of the Argentine flag in the Malvinas Islands. It should be noted that this article was published on November 1, 2020, coinciding with the commemoration of the anniversary of the beginning of the revolution that led Algeria's independence from France, in order to unite the claims of the peoples who fight against colonialism.

The members of the Commission supported the legitimate Argentine rights over the Malvinas Question and agreed on a work plan to publicize the Cause of the Malvinas Islands in Algeria. This includes thematic seminars, publication of articles, a photographic exhibition on the Islands, the presentation of a documentary, among other actions, both in Algiers and in other Algerian cities. The next meeting of the Commission will be held in the next few weeks.

Algeria recognizes the legitimate Argentine rights over the Malvinas, South Georgias, and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas, through its support to the Declarations at the Summits of South America - Africa (ASA), G77 + China and of South American Countries and Arab Countries (ASPA), as well as support for the resumption of negotiations between Argentina and the United Kingdom in order to find a peaceful and definitive solution to the Malvinas Question.

The National Executive Power promotes since December 2019 through the Argentine diplomatic representations abroad, the constitution of Commissions for Dialogue on Malvinas at the international level.
