In this channel one can access audiovisual material from the white continent recovered by the Argentine Antarctic Institute (IAA in the Spanish acronym) in cooperation with the Pablo Ducrós Hicken Museum of Cinema of the City of Buenos Aires. Also available are the series “Antarctic Laboratory”, about the dissemination of scientific projects, and “Ice Traces”, about Argentine Antarctic history.
Since 2018, the Argentine Antarctic Institute and the Museum of Cinema of the City of Buenos Aires have carried out a joint project dedicated to the rescue, preservation and access of Argentine films made in Antarctica throughout the 20th century. From this joint action, the work team managed to identify 86 Antarctic films, while the search continues. Currently the tasks are focused on the cataloging and physical restoration of the rolls to later be able to obtain versions in digital formats and thus provide access to the interested public. Data and information are also tracked to help understand the context of film making and circulation. Each film is invaluable, because the images encapsulated in each frame make up a fundamental part of Antarctic memory.
The IAA is a scientific and technological body, oriented under the political rules of the national State. It was created on April 17, 1951, its founder and first director was Colonel Hernán Pujato.
The institute is a member of the National System of Science and Technology of the Argentine State, and is an international pioneer in the development of Antarctic research. Its job is to define, develop, direct, control, coordinate and disseminate Argentine scientific-technological activity in Antarctica, with the aim of supporting Argentine interests in the region, within the framework of the Antarctic Treaty and in close communication with the national and international scientific community and society. It depends directly on the National Antarctic Directorate, under the sphere of the Secretariat of the Malvinas, Antarctica and South Atlantic of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship.
