Governor Capriles banned from public office

Saturday, 08 April 2017
Information for the Press N°:
124/17

The Argentine Government conveys its concern over the decision taken by the Special Proceedings Directorate of the Comptroller General’s Office of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to disqualify Governor Henrique Capriles Radonski from holding public office for 15 years. The implementation of such decision would curtail the right of the Venezuelan people to freely choose their candidates for elective offices.

In accordance with the Declaration of States Parties to MERCOSUR on the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, dated 1 April 2017, and Resolution No. 1078 (2018/17) of the OAS Permanent Council, the Argentine Government urges the Venezuelan Government to respect and guarantee the political rights and freedoms which are essential to a fully fledged representative democracy under the rule of law. In that context, Argentina urges that the political ban on Mr. Capriles Radoski be lifted.
