Today, Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra participated in the closure of the International Seminar “Towards a G-20 agenda for Latin America”, at which she underscored the need to foster a regional agenda, with a view to the Heads of State and Government Summit to be hosted by Argentina in 2018.
“Planning a G-20 agenda from a Latin American standpoint is very important. We must be able to foster it constructively, share opinions and be open-minded to embrace our differences. Argentina must build bridges once again,” stated Malcorra, during her address at the University of Belgrano.
“We are undergoing a very special period worldwide, and the opportunity to create shared agendas is needed more than ever, much more than during (the crisis of) 2008. There are many facets to the responsibility of chairing the G-20 next year,” stated the Minister. “We will not impose ourselves on the G-20. We will elaborate on the issues addressed by China and Germany, at the core of which is development. We will expand on this issue and work on it further, which is currently a worldwide necessity,” she added.
In June 2016, during the G-20 Sherpa meeting in Xiamen, China, representatives from the top twenty economies in the world unanimously approved the 2018 Argentine presidency of the Group.
“It is important that they acknowledged that Argentina can shoulder such a responsibility. We should take special pride in this,” highlighted Malcorra.
Present at the seminar, organized by Fundación Embajada Abierta, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Argentina and the University of Belgrano, were the Sherpas of Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, the three G-20 Latin American countries, in addition to scholars from the member countries of this year’s G-20 Troika (China, Germany and Argentina).
“Latin America comprises many countries with different political, ideological and development models, which is to be greatly respected. The existence of hegemonic leaderships in any model is unfavourable. We must acknowledge Latin American diversity and find points in common based on respect for our differences,” concluded Malcorra.
