Overview of Argentine agri-food and beverages in international trade

Wednesday, 25 February 2026

This paper analyses Argentina’s exportable agri-food supply, with a special focus on its global positioning. In this third part, the following sectors are analysed in detail: soy, maize, meat and wheat.

The first and second part of this paper analysed Argentina’s exportable agri-food supply as a global power in strategic sectors. Special emphasis was placed on its global positioning and competitiveness, but also on the diversity of its exportable supply, based on the notion of ‘Export Complexes’ defined by INDEC. An initial classification of agri-food sectors into three groups according to their export value was proposed as a starting point for a more detailed analysis. Thus, in this first and second part eleven complexes were studied: “Fruits and nuts”, “Dairy” and “Legumes and vegetables”, “Fishing”, “Sunflower”, “Barley”, “Peanuts”, “Sugar”, “Rice”, “Honey”, “Yerba mate” and “Tea”.

In this third part, the analysis is extended to the four remaining agri-food complexes, those that exceed the USD 2.5 billion exports per year: the “tanks” of foreign trade in agri-food and beverages. The selection includes the “Soybean”, “Maize”, “Meat” (comprising beef, poultry and horse meat) and ‘Wheat’ complexes. In these, Argentina has undisputed scale, track record and competitiveness at the global level.

To characterise the exportable supply of each complex, the main exported products are described and Argentina’s relative position in international markets is identified. An analysis of revealed comparative advantages (RCA) is also included, which helps to understand the specific competitiveness of each product in the international context.
